My presentation:

Hi my name is Dee. My campaign for your medicine your health is called ASK. The aim of the campaign is to open up conversation between the patient and the pharmacist. From part of my research in to human behaviours people responded better from a one to one conversation and were more receptive and to follow through with tasks. I understand that pharmacists have busy days, however a one minute conversation with the patient could make all the difference.

There is two parts to this campaign, one aimed at the general public which includes posters and ads placed such as doctors surgeries and places out and about in the general public as first part of raising awareness

The next part of the campaign is aimed at the pharmacist which would include a pack for them with posters and information leaflets, and merchandise. Having the mug and pin badge are reminders to patient to ask questions and that the pharmacist is open to having a conversation, even maybe utilising the consultation rooms that are available.

I have created a small animation which could sit on the YMYH website and in the doctors surgeries to accompany the campaign leaflets and posters

Presenting our final ideas to the client was a little nerve recking. As a group we decided to present first out of all the presentations and Im glad that we did. We presented really well and because all of our ideas were varied we gave a dynamic performance. Personally I felt that I had skipped through my presentation fast and when I got to the end I found that I have missed out quite a lot of what I wanted to say regarding my campaign. Luckily we were able to chat to the clients afterwards, so was able to make up for the parts that I missed. However I was still a little disappointed that I was so nervous that I wasn’t able to delivery my practised presentation. I guess that I can only get better with time though.

As a class I was really impressed with the quality of work that was produced overall, made me feel a little inadequate with the work that I had produced myself, especially some of the animations that were created, made mine look medico! Plenty of room for improvement there. I have found it hard to come up with concepts that innovative and different in this project. However, the feed back from our client was positive and that they were impressed with the outcomes of our campaigns. At the time there was no critic as such on anything that we could refine on over the next, but it will be interesting to get feed back from our lectures on what they have said. Personally I need to work on the leaflets and information and text that needs to be put into the Pharmacist packs. My animation also needs tweaking and timing to the heart beat needs to be more precise to create a more polished piece.

YMYH Animation

I decided to create an animation to sit along side the campaign. Something that could sit on social media, in the doctors surgery or on the clients website. I wanted it to be short and to the point, nothing too complicated. I started by visualising the animation by creating an initial story board.

I wanted to keep the animation to about 20 seconds with little text on there to get the point over clearly. Using icons that I had already created for leaflets and posters so that it all ties in together. In the storyboard above I thought that by creating a heartbeat line which would write out the text in the animation.  My initial attempt, is without the heart beat line writing the text, using aftereffects I drew up a new storyboard for the client presentation.

However after an tutorial it was suggested that I use the heart which sits on the campaign ephemera. Also to have the text more punchy with ASK, YOUR PHARMACIST, YOUR HEALTH, YOUR MEDICINE, which would go along with a beating heart sound effect and the words pulsing to the beat.

After review this with my lecturer, I decided that the text needed to sit in a different order within the animation, to give a clearer message to the audience. After some more tweaking the finish product that I  am going to presented to the client in our final presentation.

Client Meeting – Initial concepts

The meeting with our client from Cwm Taf university health board enabled us as a group to discuss our initial concept in response to the brief provided by themselves. The point of the campaign is to raise awareness and actions that the public can easily take in to manage their own medicines effectively.

As a designer the challenge is to communicate these messages via a simple and direct campaign, to enable the recipients to be well informed and able them to make appropriate actions the will improve their health and reduce the risk of unintentional harm to others and the environment. This meeting was a great chance for us to show off our skills and receive feed back from our client.

The meeting in my eyes was a success, the client was pleased and surprised with the amount of work that we had already achieved.

These are the concepts that I presented to the client;

Concept 1.

This campaign is to engage with the patient and make them aware of how much it costs the NHS if you don’t take your medicines properly. It will also make them aware of the benefits of taking their medication properly.

Concept 2.

This campaign is to encourage people to clear out their medicine cabinets and to keep their medicines in a safe and secure place. It will includes tips for parents to help encourage them to keep medication locked away from children and vulnerable adults.

Concept 3.

The aim of this campaign is to encourage pharmacists to have a proper conversation with their and the risks and benefits of taking different drugs. Also to improve the health and well-being of the patients, and to have a more patient focused approach.

The client was veering towards the pharmacy packs, but really liked the tagline on one of the other campaigns of “A Prescription for Good Health.” This is something that I could combine together.

Research and working with information

Six Frames

When looking into research and different information we are encouraged think laterally about what we are taking in and how relevant it is to our brief, and how we direct our attention in a conscience manner.

We looked at breaking up the information that we gather into to categories to enable us to achieve clarity in our research to produce a piece of work that is clear and comprehensive. From Wendy’s workshop we delved into ways of research that took into account “six frames” taken off the back of Edward De Bono a brain training pioneer and author of the six thinking hats. A method that helps you to think laterally and outside of the box to achieve more effective results from our research.

Within this workshop instead of using that different hats, we discussed the use of symbols each with a different step to take when research our particular subject area.

  • Purpose – to think about the information that we are investigating. To think about What, Why and Where the information has come from.
  • Accuracy – Is it correct? How truthful is the information?
  • Point of view – Where has the source of the information come from? Balance out the point of view.
  • Interest – Is it broad or specific. How does it answer the need of the brief. Is there an  element of surprise that could be used within our design.
  • Value – Comprehensiveness. What is the value of the information. What has it given me? Does it help me to understand my purpose better, or has it created doubt.
  • Outcome – What are the next steps that can be taken from this research. Is it still relevant or clear?

I found this way of break down my research really helpfully. Better than the six hat way of tackling information that I have researched in the past. I wish that we had been shown this earlier on it the course, as it is a more concise way for myself of helping to myself to research and then carry forward what is relevant in the information that I have researched in the past. This is something that I will be carrying forward when all my briefs that I have in the future.

ADZ5888 Reflective Writing – Field Review

 

I found this part of our course really enjoyable this year as apposed to last year as I feel that I’ve gained more new experiences, techniques and skills. Both of the field projects that I was able to use my skills that I have learnt whilst studying and have learnt skills that I would not have been able to if this was not part of the course.

 

Disobedient Objects

For my first field project I worked collaboratively with a Product Design student. The content of the project brief I found really interesting, I was able to explore and experiment with skills that are beyond my own discipline within Graphic design, such as the 3D printer, and laser cutting. We were asked to make a Disobedient Object which has a conceptual or material response to a political, social, or domestic situation. After ideation with my colleague we came up with an idea to make a robotic remote control finder, mainly because I have spent too much time wasted trying to find the remote control after the kids have had it.

To be honest it was a little ambitious of us as it involved, arduino programming, electronics, motors, laser cutting, all of which I had never done before and in a short period of time. with support and expertise from our lectures we managed to make a robot dog that moved, even though it had many teething problems but as a conceptual idea I feel that we produced a good piece of work for this project. The outcome its self was somewhat disobedient, I found it challenging trying to programme the legs of the robot to work harmoniously together, and was somewhat comical to watch it trying to walk across the studio floor.

Overall I really engaged in this project and have come away with skills that I would like to use in my own graphic design work. The coding and arduino programming is something that I feel would enhance some of my future work, with the possibility to creating interactive pieces.

Information is Power

This was a pie chart free zone!

We were encourages to think about data in a boarder sense and consider different visual systems and how they could be displayed. Working on a short project collaboratively and then individual with personally driven data used for our final outcome.

I could have pushed myself further in this project, and my time management was not the best. Even so I enjoyed the brief and acquired some new skills along the way. From my the pervious field project I took a interest in arduino programming and felt that I could incorporate this into my data project to make something which was interactive for the audience. I had undertaken some research into conductive paint and touch boards, which when you touch it would produce sound or light which  is something that I wanted to explore and this project gave me the capability to do so. After some research into viable data to choose I chose to collate data from the creative industries, which has been the biggest growing industry in the UK since 2010. Which made me think that as a nation we are becoming more creative as a whole and wanted to create something that celebrated this.

During the construction process I came across a few hurdles, the interactive paint and connections to the arduino and the touch board were temperamental and when it came to demonstrating the finished project it was not as receptive as it had been the day before. Learning from this in the future I will be taking a video of the finished result for presentation purposes. However there is so much potential with the use of conductive paint and can see myself using it in future projects with the possibility of using it for making screen prints.

 

 

 

 

RoCo end result

I didn’t quite know what to expect from part of my course……but Im pleased overall that I chose Disobedient Objects. Not only because I learnt a whole new set of skills but I was actually  please with our final outcome. At the beginning of the project I didn’t quite know how it was going to all come together. There were moments when I didn’t think that it was even look like a dog. Even though the final concept doesn’t do what we first intended, I have learnt so many new skills, which can be applied to back to graphics. Processing in particular, is something that I am going to learn more about, mostly because you are able to use sensors to create interaction with the users or viewer, something that I would like to explore more within my work.  As well as this I found the Arduino’s fascinating, Im still getting my head around how it all works, but have picked up the basics. It has opened up a new process of thought, especially when it comes to looking my children’s electrical toys, I’m finding that I want to know how it all works inside.

Our Robot dog Roco is disobedient in itself and which I found humorous. There is a lot more tweaking that needs to be done to the robot dog, he has difficulty walking properly, its a bit random, could be fixed with reprogramming the Arduino. However put some music to him, he looks like he’s dancing.

 

To go with the project I made a short advert for Roco the dog. Hopefully you will get the idea behind the Robot Dog. I produced it in AfterEffects, not meant as anything to serious, but it was nice practice to use it again.

As part of the deliverables we were asked to produce a 2 sided Operating Manuel for our final outcome. It was created in InDesign, all the pictures drawn in illustrator. The typeface used was Futura, which is also used in the Advert.

Overall I found this part of the course really great. It was enjoyable to be more hands on with my work, as opposed to be sitting at the computer. Im going to try and incorporate some more practical elements into my work. Looking forward to using the 3D and laser printers again soon.

Robot Dog Design process and programming

I found it a slow process from design to getting the model for the dog made. There was a lot to think about when it came to the motors and how the legs where going to move. We decided to make a small model to test out how the motors would turn to make the legs move. Below is a model that we made from cardboard and wood.

We found this movement inside was not as good as first anticipated. There was also issues with the movement of the legs as they were not able to freely move as we had glued it into place, making it difficult for it to walk. The idea was only to have the one motor powering the legs, but after this experiment with the mechanics inside we felt that two motors would be conducive.

Also thoughts on using a bluetooth signal for the dog to hone into. From our Arduino workshop we had a pretty good idea of how to programme the motors. It was getting the legs to move that was going to be the hard one. IMG_7305

This is the model that was made to fit the Arduino onto, with the motors slotting inside the case to hold it all in place. After making this model was decided to make the casing bigger to take into account the batteries and switch that was going to be added later on in the process. After we got this point we starting to delve into the ascetics of the actual dog itself.

Aurdino motor programming

We were able to write the coding for the movement of the legs, for Forwards, Backwards, turn left, turn right and stop.

Originally the idea was to 3D print all of the parts of the dog and fit together. We found a file at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:979218  and had a go at 3D printing it to get an idea of time scale and how t would look for our own robotic dog.

Unfortunately the file that was downloaded from the site was not as good as anticipated. As well as this we found out that 3D printing can be a little temperamental. As you can see below the finish on the dogs head was not as clean as we needed.

Was a good experience using the 3D printer, but we swayed towards the possibility of laser cutting instead, as 3D was a lot more time consuming and we were able to adapt our design more efficiently using the laser cutter.

Laser cutting – casing for the Arduino

This video shows the laser cutter cutting out the box for housing the electronics in the body of the dog. The files for the printer were produced in illustrator. I found it difficult to get the measurements correct, but got there in the end. The rest of the dog including the body, head and legs were all produced with the laser cutter, it was just a matter of fitting them altogether.

This is the head of the dog, taken from d-torso template, which was traced in illustrator so that we could send it to the laser cutter.

Once all was put together we tried to change the power cable to batteries, however once the batteries were fitted there was not enough power to get any movement out of the dog itself. We had to go back to the original power cable for our presentation unfortunately. Probably should have given ourselves more time to tinker around with the electronics, but time was consumed with the ascetics of the Dog head and body, which took longer than expected. However in the time that we had to produce this, I was pleased with the overall look of the robot.
